Tamilnadu is one of the popular heritage centers in the world, with history dates back to 4,000 years. This magnificent peninsular state is home to various historical monuments, ancient architecture, various forms of arts, music, and dance. Heritage Sites in Tamilnadu:

UNESCO has declared 29 places as world heritage center in Tamilnadu, out of which 4 heritage sites located in Tamilnadu.

  • Brihadeeswarar Temple Thanjavur (BIG Temple)
  • Airavateswara Temple near Kumbakonam
  • Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple at Jayakondam
  • Monuments at Mahabalipuram near Chennai

Brihadeeswarar Temple Thanjavur (BIG Temple):

Thanjavur is reputed for its architecture, art and various ancient temples and monuments. Brihadeeswarar Temple Thanjavur was declared as world heritage center by UNESCO in 1987. This temple displays architecture magnificence of Cholas. This temple was built by RajaRaja Chola I and it took about 6 years for completion.

Airavateswara Temple near Kumbakonam:

Kumbakonam is called as Temple city of Tamilnadu and this city is home to hundreds of temples. This place is visited by Hindu pilgrimage from all over the world.  Airavateswara Temple referred as the Great Living Chola Temple by UNESCO and was declared as the UNESCO heritage site in the year 2004.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple at Jayakondam:

Gangaikonda Cholapuram was once the capital of Cholas. This temple was built by Rajendra Chola I son of Great Rajaraja Chola. This historic temple was built after he captured Ganga dynasty.

Monuments at Mahabalipuram near Chennai

Mahabalipuram is also called Mamallapuram just located 60 km from Chennai – Capital of Tamilnadu. It’s one of the popular tourist destinations in the world visited by travelers round the year.
